The Rotary Club of Kingston partnered with National Commercial Bank (NCB) and a number of other entities to honour Jamaica’s national heroes at Emancipation Park as a part of the official Jamaica 55 legacy projects. Busts of Jamaica’s seven national heroes were unveiled under a project titled Historical Corridor of Jamaica’s Journey to Freedom. This two year project, was a part of the organisation’s strategic objective to create awareness and give back to the community on a national level, elated club president Michael Buckle explained. The aim, he explained at the unveiling ceremony earlier this week, was to showcase in a permanent way the true architects of freedom, while reminding Jamaicans that we stand on the shoulders of those who sacrificed and made tremendous contributions to Jamaica land we love. Bringing the keynote address, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange commended the Rotary Club and thanked partners for their investments. The minister noted that the busts represented important historical symbolism, highlighting our ancestors who were of a pedigree not daunted by challenges. Though they came to Jamaica shackled and bewildered, some became freedom fighters and buffalo soldiers. Proud sponsor of His Excellency Samuel “Daddy” Sharpe, Nadeen Matthews Blair, Chief Digital & Marketing Officer, NCB said “we are honoured to support nation-building through the unearthing and preservation of history as we pay homage to the men and women who played an invaluable role in securing our freedom as a nation. This the great legacy we have inherited and as an organisation continue to foster in our quest to meaningfully contribute to nation-building. As visitors to the park walk through the corridor of National Heroes, they can relive history as they view the lifelike busts created by sculptor, Hon. Basil Watson. Each is also complemented by a plaque in tribute to the person and his/her contributions to Jamaica’s development. Plaques with the National Anthem and Pledge were also erected at the entrance to the park. Other supporters to the project include the National Housing Trust, the Institute of Jamaica, Jamaica National Heritage Trust, Mayberry Investments, Scotiabank, Tourism Enhancement Fund, Advanced Integrated Systems, Stewart's Auto Group, Downsound Records and Yello Media Group.
